Basil oil is produced from the herb Ocimum basilicum, of the Lamiaceae family. Basil oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and the flowering tops.

Basil is native to Asia and the Pacific Islands, but is now cultivated throughout Europe and the United States of America.
