Originated in Asia, the shallot is a bulbous vegetable of the Allium family and contains numerous vitamins and minerals like potassium, phosphorus, thiamin, folic acid, calcium, copper, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K and anti-oxidants. Shallots are available canned, pickled, powdered, frozen or fresh at supermarkets across the world. The consumption of shallots is also known to prevent constipation and lower cholesterol, it can be diced and added to fruits and vegetables, sandwiches or other dishes of choice.
