The Health Benefits of Copaiba Balsam Herb

Copaiba balsam is a sap-like substance (oleoresin) collected from the trunk of trees that belong to the Copaifera species. They produce many small, white flowers on long panicles and small fruit pods with 2-4 seeds inside. The part of the tree that is often employed medicinally is the oleoresin that accumulates in cavities within the tree trunk, as a topical anti-inflammatory agent for all types of skin problems.

Copaiba resin is sold in gel capsules in stores and pharmacies in Brazil and recommended for all types of internal inflammation, stomach ulcers and cancer. Copaiba’s traditional uses as an antiseptic for sore throat, upper respiratory and urinary tract infections can be explained partly by the resin’s antibacterial properties documented in the 1960s and 1970s.

In aromatherapy, Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil is used to treat arthritis, backaches, cancer, Crohn’s Disease, digestive discomfort, fever, fibromyalgia, headaches, immune system, lower back pain, neck pain and stiffness, sciatica, skin issues and stomach ulcers. Its oil is steam distilled from the resin of trees wild grown throughout South America. Copaiba has the medical properties of being a diuretic, a laxative, a stimulant, it is good for congestion, and mucus builds up, and is anti-carcinogenic.

Copaiba brings the body into homeostasis, so if you do not need a laxative or stimulant effect, don’t worry, you won’t get that action. It is extremely effective as an anti-inflammatory and works amazingly well for arthritis pain. Any pain due to inflammation (which is basically all pain) will respond to Copaiba. It is also very effective against urinary incontinence, and it has used successfully in several dogs to stop urine dribbling.

In perfumery Copaiba balsam is an excellent and inexpensive solution as a base note fixative for natural perfume and can also be added to essential oil blends for scenting candles and soap. Always test a small amount of essential oil first for sensitivity or allergic reaction. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Do not take internally.
