Many people consume fish oil supplements daily because it is well known to keep the body healthy and is packed with many vitamins and minerals. But, how many of us really know what is fish oil?


Fish oil is a healthy supplement derived from the tissues of oily fish although it is also obtained from eating the fish itself. Fishes that have oil includes salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, herring, trout, mullet, anchovy, menhaden and bluefish but the supplements are made from fishes like salmon, mackerel, tuna, cod liver, herring, halibut, seal bubbler and whale bubbler.


Fish oil can prevent a variety of health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, asthma, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, improves brain function, prevents anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, treats disorders of the eyes, ulcers and strengthens the immune system.


The two most important omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoix acid (DHA), both known to support cardiovascular health and joint health.


Over thousands of years ago, it was discovered by ancient people that consuming fish oil made them smart with the first recorded production of this miraculous product happened in England in the seventeenth (17th) century and is an excellent source of vitamin D, vitamin A, saturated fat but it is low in sodium and also contains very high levels of cholesterol.


The consumption of fish oil will also treat skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, promotes a healthy pregnancy and is known to reduce fever and fatigue. Researchers have done studies to find out its effectiveness in the treatment of AIDS but more needs to be done. When fish oil supplements, tablets, capsules and pills are consumed daily it reduces the risk of intestinal disorders, arthritis, improve blood circulation, it also provides nutrients to the hair follicles and promotes a healthy growing hair and most fish oil varieties are rich in protein which is excellent for the hair.


Fish oil must be taken in moderation or any other dietary supplements, a doctor must be contacted first before consumption as excessive dosage can have bad side effects including allergies.
