Health Benefits of Asam gelugur – Garcinia atroviridis

Asam gelugur scientific name Garcinia atroviridis, also known as, Asam gelugo, or Asam keping is a large rainforest tree native to peninsular Malaysia This species grows wild throughout peninsular Malaysia but is also widely cultivated, especially in the northern states, owing to its economic and medicinal value.

Garcinia is a large perennial plant commonly found in evergreen forests in the southern region of Thailand and Malaysia.

Garcinia atroviridis is traditionally used to treat various health ailments such as earache, coughs, enhance blood circulation, acne, lower cholesterol and manages high blood pressure. The leaves and fruits are edible.

Asam gelugur is a plant having a perennial lifecycle and usually grow up to 65.6feet tall.

The plant bears dark red flowers which are 1.9inches wide. The fruits are round which borne singly on a twig ends.

The flesh inside the fruit is yellow with a firm texture and sour taste. The skin of the fruit is smooth and thin.

The pulp possesses several flattened seeds. The shiny dark green leaves are elliptic or oblong, narrow with pointed tip & upturned edges.

There is available information to suggest that The hydroxycitric acid or HCA in Garcinia atroviridis fruit has been proven over the last few decades to be effective in the reduction of body weight and food intake, as well as beneficial in obesity-related complications such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance.
