Health benefits of Guava

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a popular saying that has scientific backing. A new study emerging from India, however, adds “but not longer than the guava”.

Guava, an oval shaped fruit with green, yellow or pink skin, is soft when ripe and filled with a fleshy fruit and lots of tiny seeds. The distinct smelling fruit is documented to have originated in Central America.

It is now a major commercial product in India and to a lesser extent, Brazil, but is found in the wild in many countries.

This fruit, although not the most popular, is considered a “super fruit” by the scientists at the India National Institute. Their studies revealed that the guava has up to four times the antioxidants found in the apple.

These antioxidants have been known to reduce the production of cancerous cells by the body; lessen the effects of aging on the skin; and help the body maintain radiant and glowing skin.

Guava can also be used to as a natural weight loss supplement, a laxative, a way to prevent diarrhea to manage the high blood pressure. These benefits are realized as each part of the fruit has its own benefits.

The seeds play the role of laxative for the body. The fruit is rich in dietary fiber which promotes healthy bowel movement and aids constipation. The leaves offer relief from the common cold.

When used to make tea or drink, its mixture reduces the mucus in the body. The ‘meat’ provides the most vitamins and minerals.

Cutting a long story short, there are so many benefits to be gained from having guava or its by-products.

They can’t all fit in one article, and there is fear they will be too unbelievable. Whether the tea, jam or leaf…the guava has benefits that go beyond belief.
