Mustard oil is used for three different oils that are extracted from mustard seeds namely, a vegetable oil, essential oil, and oil that are made by infusing the extract from mustard seed into another oil like soybean oil. It is low in saturated fats and has a high content of mono-unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3. Mustard belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is often used as body oil for massage, and is known to reduce skin dryness, improve blood circulation, muscular development and skin texture; the oil is also thought to be antibacterial and may even use as an insect repellent.

 

Mustard oil has a typical pungent and sharp flavour with numerous health benefits. Mustard oil has an antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory action as well. The antibacterial and antifungal properties work well against rashes and skin infections. Its anti-inflammatory properties help in easing the condition of irritable bowel syndrome by reducing the inflammation in lining of the stomach.

 

Mustard oil acts as a powerful stimulant by stimulating the digestive, circulatory, and excretory system. It aids in digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive juices and bile from spleen and liver, which increase the peristaltic movement of food. Massaging the oil externally stimulates blood circulation and sweat glands, thus lowering the body temperature.

 

Mustard oil is beneficial for those who are prone to cold and cough as it helps clear the congestion of chest and nose. Apply a mixture of one teaspoon of mustard oil and camphor on the chest and lie back to enable the vapours to enter the lungs. For mustard oil steam treatment, add a few spoonfuls of mustard oil and caraway seeds to a pot of boiling water and inhale this steam, this will give instant relief.

 

Mustard oil deters insects and may be an effective mosquito repellent, which can be useful in preventing malaria and other disease carried by them.

 

Mustard oil is considered extremely well for hair growth.  It is considered highly beneficial in treating dry and damaged hair. It is also known to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. You can mix mustard oil with castor or coconut oil to massage on your hair for beautiful shiny smooth hair.

 

It is enriched with vitamin E; topical application of this oil protects your skin against the harsh ultraviolet rays and other pollutants, thus preventing skin cancer. Vitamin E prevents ageing and wrinkles besides acting as a sunshield.
