Health Benefits of Durians

Durian fruit scientifically called as Durio zibethinus is also known as the king of fruits.

It is an exotic fruit which is native to Southeast Asia. Apart from Malaysia, it is also found growing in Sri Lanka, Southern Philippines, New Guinea, India, Thailand and Vietnam.

The health benefits of the Durian is that it is a good source of energy, acts as a natural anti-depressant, good for healthy bones and teeth, aids in delaying ageing, a healthy digestive system, maintaining blood sugar levels and beneficial for anaemic patients.

There are other health benefits of Durian which include its ability to help with diabetes management, reduce inflammation of the joints, reduce headaches, and potentially decrease the symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression.

Durian is distinguished for its strong odour, large size, and thorn-covered husk.

It can grow as large as 12 inches long and 6 inches in diameter, and typically weighs up two to seven pounds.

Depending on the species, it can be round or rectangular, its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red.

Four to five years after planting, the tree starts to bear fruit, and it grows up to 164 feet.

It is a seasonal fruit, Durian lasts typically from June to August, coinciding with the season of other tropical fruits such as mango and jackfruit.

Durian is rich in vitamins, energy, and minerals. It offers phytonutrients, water, protein, and beneficial fats.

While very low in cholesterol and sodium, it is rich in dietary fibre and is a good source of antioxidant vitamin C, which helps hunt harmful free radicals and assists in the body’s resistance against infection.
