Benefits of Soursop

Soursop is a well known and highly regarded fruit in the tropical regions of Asia and South America but until recently was little known in the West.

In cultures where it occurs naturally it is known not only as a delicious fruit, but as having health and medicinal benefits as well.

Native to South America and sub-Saharan parts of Africa, soursop is also cultivated throughout Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Indonesia and has become a staple fruit in those countries.


Soursop is an excellent source of vitamin C, a nutrient which increases the acidity level of urine, resulting in a decreased number of harmful bacteria that may be present in the urinary tract

It contains potassium, lack of potassium, together with magnesium, calcium and sodium (also known as electrolytes) in the body can cause muscle weakness and cramping.

Women who experience water retention before their monthly period would benefit from the soursop’s rich magnesium content. It may help alleviate this annoying premenstrual symptom.


If you are feeling a little tired, eat soursop! It can supply the body a good amount of thiamin, the B vitamin which is needed in aerobic energy production, the process when oxygen is used to help convert sugar into usable energy.

Headache? Try soursop! It has riboflavin. Several studies have shown that high riboflavin intake helps prevent migraines.

In addition, soursop fruit is cholesterol free and low in calories, making it an ideal snack or flavourful addition to a dessert.
